Max Verstappen claimed his 40th F1 pole position by beating Lando Norris in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Verstappen, who won the Sprint earlier on Saturday, has been on top form all weekend and took pole by four tenths from Norris on the shortest track on the calendar in terms of lap time.

Oscar Piastri had gone third fastest in qualifying but had his lap time deleted for track limits at Turn Six, so George Russell was promoted to third, with Carlos Sainz in fourth.

Piastri dropped four places to seventh, behind Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who nearly crashed at the end of Q3 at the penultimate corner.

Sergio Perez qualified eighth, with Nico Hulkenberg in ninth but under investigation for two pit lane infringements, and Esteban Ocon was 10th.

Austrian GP Qualifying: Top 10

2) Lando Norris, McLaren

3) George Russell, Mercedes

4) Carlos Sainz, Ferrari

5) Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

6) Charles Leclerc, Ferrari

7) Oscar Piastri, McLaren

8) Sergio Perez, Red Bull

9) Nico Hulkenberg, Haas

10) Esteban Ocon, Alpine

Verstappen hails ‘statement’ performance

Verstappen had not been on pole in the last three races coming into Austria but has topped every session this weekend at the Red Bull Ring.

The reigning world champion was over half a second faster than anyone else in Q2 and found himself three tenths in front of the field following the first Q3 runs.

He put the nail in the coffin by going even quicker on his last qualifying run to end up with the biggest pole margin of the year at 0.404s ahead of Norris, who also improved with his second lap.

Max Verstappen takes the Austrian Grand Prix pole as Lando Norris claims second.

“The qualifying went really well. We tried to adjust the car a little bit after the things that we learnt this morning, I think it worked well,” said Verstappen, who leads Norris by 71 points in the drivers’ championship.

“The track was a bit warmer than yesterday, so it made it trickier to drive, but the car felt a lot better for me today. I could really attack the corners a bit more, every run was on point and it was very enjoyable out there.

“It has been a while that we have actually been on pole [for a Grand Prix] so it’s great. It’s a great feeling. The team has been working really hard to make the car more competitive and I think this is a great statement. Hopefully we can, of course, also show that tomorrow in the race.”

Hamilton limits damage after tricky qualifying

Hamilton qualified in fifth after another tricky qualifying, where he was in the drop zone in Q1 with five minutes remaining.

The seven-time world champion managed to get through but said on the radio “I’m just slow”.

He was also off the pace compared to the other front-runners in Q2 but salvaged fifth place behind Sainz and Mercedes team-mate Russell.

Hamilton has been summoned for an alleged unsafe release when he knocked his rear jack over as he left the garage in Q3.

Lewis Hamilton luckily avoids damage after knocking over the jack on pit exit during Q3 of the Austrian Grand Prix.

“We made some progress with the balance of the car,” said Hamilton, who was six tenths away from pole.

“I should have probably started the weekend with this balance but nonetheless it was ok, the lap was pretty decent at the end. The middle sector was a little bit down but overall it’s alright.”

Perez had a similar path to the final part of qualifying as Hamilton and could only manage eighth.

The Mexican was nine tenths down on pole-sitter Verstappen, so is likely to not be able to help his Red Bull team-mate in the race.

Anthony Davidson was at the SkyPad to look back on qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

No surprises down the order

It was a relatively straightforward qualifying as the top teams all progressed into Q3.

Fernando Alonso was frustrated in 15th for Aston Martin, while Daniel Ricciardo missed out on going through Q2 by 0.015s and will start 11th.

Kevin Magnussen, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda were the other drivers eliminated in Q2.

Both Williams and Saubers were knocked out in Q1, along with Lance Stroll, who earlier this week was confirmed to stay at Aston Martin for 2025.

“Hacks” Star Megan Stalter Found a Ring for Herself and Her Girlfriend https://www.apexnewslive.com/hacks-star-megan-stalter-found-a-ring-for-herself-and-her-girlfriend-2/ https://www.apexnewslive.com/hacks-star-megan-stalter-found-a-ring-for-herself-and-her-girlfriend-2/#respond Sat, 29 Jun 2024 16:23:59 +0000 https://www.apexnewslive.com/hacks-star-megan-stalter-found-a-ring-for-herself-and-her-girlfriend-2/

Megan Stalter has lost almost every piece of jewelry she’s ever owned.

But she’s determined to flip the script on the Scorpio signet ring that she wore for a recent interview with The New York Times. Ms. Stalter’s girlfriend wears the another ring just like it.

Ms. Stalter found the matching rings at a store in Hollywood that sells jewelry, greeting cards and crystals. She was looking for a piece she could wear to pay homage to her girlfriend while filming “Too Much,” a forthcoming Netflix series by Lena Dunham, in which Ms. Stalter has a starring role.

Ms. Stalter also stars as the titular, leopard-coat-wearing character in the recently released film “Cora Bora.” And she has stolen many scenes in her supporting role on “Hacks,” the comedy series, over its three seasons on Max.

The 33-year-old actress, in an interview that has been edited and condensed, talked about the ring that she has refused to lose, and why it is worth holding onto.

Tell me about the jewelry you’re wearing.

It’s a Scorpio ring that matches a ring I gave to my girlfriend, who is a Scorpio. It was a secret sign to show her that I was thinking of her in all of the scenes in the last show I did.

Did you wear it while you were filming?

I made it a really big deal on set for me to be able to wear the ring. I said, “I really need my character to wear this ring; it’s really important to me that the character has this ring because someone in the character’s life must have given it to her.”

Everyone was kind of like, Why does she care about that ring so much? It wasn’t something the character naturally would wear. So I had to have a whole story about it, and I was like, “Yeah, I feel like someone gave it to her. “

They didn’t mind if I wore it, but they wanted to find a replica ring because they want to have backup stuff in case you lose the original. But they couldn’t find one — I even told them what store I bought it at. They couldn’t get another one. And I’m like, “OK, I guess we have the only two.”

Your girlfriend is a Scorpio. What’s your sign?

I’m a Virgo, but they didn’t have that option.

Had you been searching for a ring for the two of you, specifically? Or did you come across the Scorpio ring and get that idea?

I wanted to get something for us that’s matching because I was going away for a big job. I wanted us to have the same thing to look at. It reminded me of her, so I wanted to be wearing it.

I’m not a ring person. It’s nice to have one that means a lot. I’m really proud of myself that I haven’t lost the ring because it’s important to me.

Did wearing the ring while filming “Too Much” ever take you out of character? Did it help you get into character?

I’m wearing it during earlier parts of my character’s life in the show, not in the whole show. So wearing the ring actually did make me think, this is her younger. But the ring’s real meaning is for me.

The costume is such a big part of the character. When you put on the stuff, it feels different than your own clothes. My dresser in the show actually told me that people are warmer in their own clothes. Costumes are not yours, so you don’t feel as warm.

Austrian GP: Max Verstappen tops practice despite causing red flag ahead of Sprint Qualifying at Red Bull Ring | F1 News https://www.apexnewslive.com/austrian-gp-max-verstappen-tops-practice-despite-causing-red-flag-ahead-of-sprint-qualifying-at-red-bull-ring-f1-news/ https://www.apexnewslive.com/austrian-gp-max-verstappen-tops-practice-despite-causing-red-flag-ahead-of-sprint-qualifying-at-red-bull-ring-f1-news/#respond Fri, 28 Jun 2024 12:07:25 +0000 https://www.apexnewslive.com/austrian-gp-max-verstappen-tops-practice-despite-causing-red-flag-ahead-of-sprint-qualifying-at-red-bull-ring-f1-news/

Max Verstappen was quickest in the only practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix despite causing a red flag.

Championship leader Verstappen stopped on track halfway through the session due to a sensor issue with his engine but rolled back down the hill on the main straight and was pushed back to the garage.

He came back onto the track just a few minutes later and went on to top the timing sheets by 0.276s from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Lando Norris had gone quickest in the first sector on his soft tyre run but went wide at Turn Four, so aborted his lap and finished down in 13th. McLaren spent the first half of the session testing their new front wing and floor which they have brought to Spielberg.

Carlos Sainz was fourth, with Lewis Hamilton in fifth but the Mercedes driver’s best lap was on the hards and set much earlier in the session.

Hamilton was only 0.569s off Verstappen’s leading pace but his early speed will be encouraging as Mercedes continue to show strong form after podiums in Canada and Spain.

Esteban Ocon was sixth, with the newly re-signed Lance Stroll in seventh for Aston Martin and George Russell was eighth, also on the hard tyres.

Yuki Tsunoda nearly collided with a slow-moving Williams at the final corner but ended up ninth and Fernando Alonso was 10th.

Quick thinking from Red Bull and Verstappen

It looked like Verstappen was going to lose crucial track time ahead of Sprint Qualifying, which is live on Sky Sports F1 at 3.30pm.

His engineer Gianpiero Lambiase told him to stay in the car after switching the car off, before Verstappen began to roll down the hill on the main straight towards a gap in the pit wall.

The marshals pushed him through the gap into the pit lane where his Red Bull crew retrieved the car and managed to quickly get him back out there, so he didn’t lose any time.

Mercedes didn’t do a qualifying simulation, but the early signs are they will be up there with Red Bull and McLaren this weekend.

“Mercedes hit the ground running, they seem to be okay on pace. I feel like Ferrari are lacking a bit,” said Sky Sports F1‘s Anthony Davidson.

“Verstappen was supreme, always quick around here and he’s got the car to do it.

“We didn’t see the full story [with Lando Norris], but that first sector whets the appetite for later.

“I take away from it that Norris is once again Verstappen’s closest competitor in Austria.”

Max Verstappen admits his team cannot afford “messy” weekends to continue winning in Formula 1, such are the tight margins between Red Bull and McLaren ahead of this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Verstappen and Lando Norris have fought for the win in four of the last five events as the field has closed up since the latter won the Miami Grand Prix in early May.

Ferrari and Mercedes were slightly off the pace last time out in Barcelona but the short lap time at the Red Bull Ring, which is the shortest of the year, should make things extremely competitive.

McLaren are the team with momentum though and it was this time 12 months ago when they put their first major upgrade on the car, which marked the start of their move towards the front of the pecking order.

“I think McLaren at the moment, they’re just very solid. They’re good everywhere, every single track,” said Verstappen, who leads the championship by 69 points from Norris.

“You could see in Barcelona, they were very good on their tyres. They could just push more on them compared to, I think, everyone else on the grid without actually degrading off that much at the end of stints.

“Even the last stint, my last few laps were quite a struggle, where Lando was definitely catching up a lot, so these are things that we have to do better. Plus, of course, our known issues with the kerbs and bumps, low speed, basically.”

Max Verstappen dismissed rumours he’d leave Red Bull anytime soon saying he’s focused on next year.

Important to be quick out of the blocks

Austria is a Sprint weekend, so there is just one practice session at 11.30am on Friday before going straight into Sprint Qualifying at 3.30pm – live on Sky Sports F1.

In Imola and Canada, Red Bull found themselves on the backfoot but spent hours in the simulator overnight to find a sweet spot and Verstappen was able to get onto the front row.

I would say Barcelona, we had just a normal weekend, we were just too slow,” said Verstappen on Red Bull’s inconsistent Fridays recently.

Look back at some of the most dramatic moments throughout the years at the Austrian Grand Prix.

“Then you try to keep on making adjustments and then luckily, I think in qualifying, it all felt a bit better. But that was probably just a normal progression that you have throughout the weekend.

“Before that, of course, we had some messy weekends. So we cannot afford that anymore, these kind of things. So of course, I just hope for a clean weekend, basically like we did in Barcelona, but hopefully a little bit more pace as well.”

As for McLaren, they appear to have a more well-rounded car that is easier to get into the optimal working window.

Oscar Piastri has struggled at the last two events but thinks McLaren’s car is able to be fast straight away on a race weekend.

“Barcelona aside, I have been comfortable with the car from the first lap in practice,” he said.

“I think we should be pretty confident we can hit the ground running. Last weekend was a reminder it’s not always easy to achieve that, but we should be confident we can be strong out of the blocks.”

Traffic to be an issue

The short lap time means traffic will be a major problem in Sprint Qualifying and Qualifying, especially in the first segment of each session.

Ideally, the drivers will want to be three seconds behind another car who is also on a flying lap to get a small benefit of the slipstream without being hindered by dirty air in the corners.

However, the drivers will also back up before starting their lap in the final two corners, which now features gravel close to the edge of the circuit.

It’s an area which Norris is highly aware of and he believes certain drivers tend to allegedly block more than others.

George Russell says it’s good to see Lando Norris at the top battling for wins but joked he hopes it won’t ‘last long’.

“It’s always crazy, especially on shorter circuits. There are common denominators of people who get in the way and stuff like that. It’s normally quite clear who does it,” said Norris.

“For us, getting out of the way of people is the highest priority of our communication and it doesn’t seem like that’s the case for other people. Nothing we can do about it.

“It’s always chaotic because you use it to try to get slipstreams at times but with a blind last two corners it’s sometimes hard to know because the speed difference between a slow lap and quick lap are pretty big. That’s the challenge of the circuit.

“It’s up to the drivers, if they don’t want to get a penalty, they should tell their engineer to give more information on where people are.”

Take a look at Lando Norris’ rollercoaster race in Spain as the McLaren driver came so close to his second Formula 1 win.

Close fight expected for rest of the season

Red Bull have a 60-point advantage over Ferrari and are 93 points in front of McLaren in the constructors’ championship.

Sergio Perez has scored just four points in the last three races, with Christian Horner admitting the Mexican must improve to help the team in the title race.

Whether Perez can consistently perform closely to Verstappen will dictate McLaren and Ferrari’s chances to reel Red Bull in.

“We are working flat out as a team to make every weekend better and more straightforward. I know there will be good weekends and bad weekends,” said Perez.

“Last weekend the margins were extremely tight and if you find a couple tenths it will make a massive difference. It’s important to be calm about it.”

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Sergio Perez says he’s aiming for a positive weekend in Austria after suffering several ‘nightmare’ races this season.

Perez hasn’t beaten Verstappen when both drivers have seen the chequered flag for over a year and the close fight at the front has seen other teams get in between the Red Bull pair.

The 34-year-old says “it’s important to maximise form” and expects the close competition to continue all the way until the season-finale in Abu Dhabi.

“I think it will be like this for the rest of the year unless someone finds a magic bullet. But I don’t expect it.

“It’s getting harder and harder for people to find performance. There will be tracks where one team is very good at and vice versa.

“It will be down to the level of detail, level of precision and maximising weekends when you have the opportunity to win.”
